Web design can encompass all sorts of different skills from different types of design to coding and development work. Building iOS apps seemed like a job for a proper developer until I came across Appcelerator Titanium.
Appcelerator Titanium allows you to create iPhone, desktop and other mobile apps by using javascript. Doing web design means you learn quite a lot about javascript and frameworks like Jquery so using another framework based on javascript to create iOS apps seemed like a good way to go.
I’ve always been interested in the graphic, web design and UI design part of creating iOS applications but Appcelerator Titanium gave me a way to tackle the development side of things as well. This will probably turn into a series of articles as I progress and learn and come across problems but to start with I’ll give you the basic overview.
Appcelerator Titanium is a… “Mobile development platform for javascript developers: Appcelerator Titanium lets you use web technologies, open source and cloud computing to build native apps for iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac OSX and Linux.”..which means its free, has a great community and forums and is producing some good apps. Wunderlist is the most high-profile app to date just passing a million downloads. Wow! And if each of those downloads was for 99p then thats a fair chunk of revenue.
To get started with Titanium you have to download the desktop development app and also grab the Apple SDK with the latest version of the mobile SDK. Its a big 5GB download so it may take some time. The other thing you’ll need to get started is the kitchen sink demo pack from the Titanium website. This is a pack of all the functions, features, buttons and pre-coded widgets ready to use in your app. Its a great resource for learning and you can copy and paste code to get started very quickly.
Setting up a demo app was very quick and it didn’t take long to do a simple Twitter search app and see it working in the simulator. First impressions are very good and using my javascript knowledge to create an iOS app feels good. I’m sure I’m going to come across lots of problems along the way and realise that my javascript skills – for a web design guy – aren’t as good as I think! We’ll see.
