Embarking on a new website design or web design & build project can be a little daunting. Your new website design should all run smoothly and the ultimate goal is to increase traffic and new business from the new website. But, these things don’t always go smoothly so here are four web design pitfalls and how to avoid them.
1. Site is too busy and confusing
Sometimes web designers like to stick on all the bells and whistles, but this can cause your site to load slowly and get in the way of proper user goals and ‘call to action’ points within the site. Every bit of Flash animation, advert, banner and widget can slow the site down and distract the user from what they should be doing. Your website should have clear user goals that are easy to follow and nothing on the page should get in the way of that. If a user is getting distracted by other things on the page and find it difficult to complete the given tasks then things should be simplified. White space isn’t dead space and it can help focus to have some ‘air’ in the design. You don’t need to fill every bit of space with something.
2. Unusable navigation
Your new website will be your online representation of your brand. You’d expect potential customers to be able to walk into a shop and find what they need easily and your website should be no different. If your potential new customer has to spend time trying to learn how to use your navigation to find the information they need they’ll most likely get frustrated, go back to their Google search results and choose the next company on the list. Thats one lost new customer. Try to design a clear, concise and easy to use navigation for your website. It is key to a good user experience and will help the user achieve those business goal you need them to carry out.
3. Spelling, Grammar and good old plain English
Both spelling and grammar are hugely important to your online credibility. Taking time to proof read website content and make sure there aren’t any mistakes and its written in understandable plain English will make sure users have confidence in your products and services and can read information easily and quickly. One typo or confusing sentence in the wrong place can have an impact on how your brand is perceived and possibly loose you new customers. Read it, then read it again, then get someone else to read it.
4. Think about SEO
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a major component of any good web design strategy. When designing your new website spend some time on SEO. There are some simple SEO tricks that can make a big difference. You don’t need lots of money, just some knowledge and a little patience. Good content with sensible key word placement and topics related to your business will help to improve search engine rankings. Having a news section that you update at least once a week with relevant articles will help, but it does take time.
