A practical online presence checklist for local businesses

Before adding another marketing channel, check the information customers already encounter. An out-of-date opening time or broken enquiry form is a specific problem you can fix; a general aim to “improve your online presence” is harder to act on.

Check the business details first

Review your website and the profiles you actively use. Check the business name, contact details, opening arrangements and links. Explain where you are based and where you provide services without implying offices you do not have.

Follow the customer's route

Start from a search result or social profile and try to find a service, its relevant details and a way to enquire. On a phone, check whether important controls are easy to use and whether forms give useful feedback. Send an agreed test enquiry and check where it arrives. Seeing a confirmation message does not prove that the notification reached the right person.

Improve the information people repeatedly ask for

Look at recent enquiries. Delivery areas, appointment arrangements, project budgets and availability may need clearer explanations. Use actual questions rather than adding local landmarks or town names simply to fill a page. A website pricing guide is one way to address budget questions without making every visitor enquire first.

Choose channels you can maintain

Use social profiles or email updates when you have an audience and useful information to share. An unused channel with obsolete information can add more maintenance than value. Decide who checks messages and what response arrangements you can sustain. A small, current presence can serve customers better than a large collection of neglected accounts.

Review outcomes before expanding

Track relevant enquiries or orders where appropriate, rather than judging progress only by impressions or followers. Note the changes you make so you can investigate their effect. For help with the website itself, see what I do or web design across Kent.
